Did you know
that buttons on a man's jacket sleeve have absolutely no
purpose. They originated on the uniforms of Napoleon's army
when he discovered that his soldiers were using their sleeves
to wipe their noses. The truth: It seems that Esther is quoting an old wives tale, but it was Frederick the Great, in the mid 1700's, who supposedly had the buttons sewn on to keep his soldiers from wiping their noses.
In reality the origin is not known, but painting exist from the
late 1500's and early 1600's showing men wearing jackets with
buttons on the sleeves.
