Pictures and info on the 1860 Indian Head Cent.
It’s amazing that the penny looks
very similar today to what it did over a century ago and this may be why coin
collectors find their hobby so amazing. While some of the currency looks very
different from what it once did, some make its roots evident. Here is a coin
that is perfect for the collector that loves not only rare coins but also a
piece of their heritage. This is the 1860 Indian Head Cent.
This beautiful coin, which has been graded MS-65 is
designed with a bold strike and a curved lip. The color of the coin is typical
for the combination of copper (88%), and nickel alloy (12%) that was used in the
Indian cents from 1859 – 1864. The mixture of the two metals resulted in a
gold-copper color with a two-tone slightly lighter shade. Once upon a time this
valued at $0.01 and today it is worth $550 - $600 USD.
