Pictures and info on the Pony Express Blue Garter stamp.
Who ever thought that an envelope
could become a collector’s item? Well, it’s not so much the envelope actually
but it’s the stamp that is on the envelope.
This envelope is a Pony Express $1.00 with a Blue,
Garter stamp and was issued in 1857. The stamp has huge margins around all four
sides, and the envelope bears the words “Pony Express, The Central Overland
California and Pikes Peak Express Company, St. Joseph, Mo., Aug. 29” printed on
it. The envelope is one of the most sought out as it is still in fine condition
and appearance and is the earliest of the four recorded covering showing the
Pony Express Garter Stamp and the only one of its kind known to still be in
existence from the 1857 issue.
The Garter Stamp, which sold for one dollar, was
the required postage needed an any piece of mail weighing over the half-ounce
limit. It has only been found on mail that has originated in the East and is
thought not to have been distributed to the California offices before the Pony
Express stopped existing.
This stamp can be purchased for the bargain price
of $150,000. Not bad for a stamp that over a century and a half ago cost $1.00.
