The story of Craigievar Castle.
Craigievar Castle is in
Aberdeenshire, Scotland and has the title of “Most Romantic Castle” in Scotland.
However, this exquisite and beautiful castle still has its troubles; it is
haunted.
The Mortimer family was the original owners of this
seven-story castle; however, it was not completed until the Forbes family became
owners and finally completed the construction in 1626. Today, the Craigievar
Castle is owned by the National Trust for Scotland.
There is only one entrance or exit to the castle
except for a secret staircase built only for the laird as an escape route. The
secret staircase has an access in the hall and the top of the tower. However,
one such lad did not know the whereabouts of the escape route and met his
demise, as the legend goes.
The tale of woe that has been passed down from
generation to generation tells of one young Gordon man that fell in love with
Sir John “Red” Forbes, the 3rd laird, daughter and came to Craigievar Castle to
court her. Sir John Forbes found the young suitor unsuitable to court his
daughter and threw the lad from the window of the Blue Room. Many people have
told the tale of hearing his footsteps climbing the stairs to his demise over
and over again.
The other not as famous ghost is one a fiddler that
only appears to members of the Forbes Family. The fiddler is said to have fallen
into the moat and drowned. However, he still appears to allow members of the
Forbes family to enjoy his fiddle playing.
