THE WORLD'S LONGEST AT BAT
THE LONGEST LIST OF THE LONGEST
STUFF AT THE LONGEST DOMAIN NAME AT LONG LAST
Who had the world's longest at Bat?
If you’re looking for an actual
statistic on who was ever the longest at bat, there really is no definitive
answer. Baseball has kept details on every pitch thrown since the 1980s. Before
that time, stats such as “Total pitches thrown in a game” were kept but not on a
batter-by-batter or pitch-by-pitch basis. Because of this, stats such as “Most
pitches to one batter” are not recognized by Major League Baseball.
However, if there were an answer, Roy Thomas would
certainly be a contender for holding this statistic. He once fouled off
twenty-two pitches, bringing the count up 3 to 2. If that’s true, he would have
been pitched at least twenty-six pitches (twenty-two fouled, three balls, and
one ball that he put in play.)
History has also passed down the story of Luke
Appling who once fouled off seventeen pitches before hitting a triple. The story
continues to say that he did this to seek revenge against a team owner who
wouldn’t give him a box of baseballs to hand out to the fans.
