On September 21, 1969 the New York Jets
were taking on the Denver Broncos and the Jets were pinned on their own one-yard
The Jets sent in their
secret weapon, Steve O’Neal, a rookie from Texas A&M, who took the punt from his
own end line.
With a bit of help from the wind the ball flew 70 yards before taking a few
good bounces, eventually being fielded by by the Lions Bill Thompson inside the
Total length of of the longest punt in NFL history; 98 yards, breaking the 94 yard record
that stood since November 16, 1931.
