Amaterasu - Japanese Mythology
Izangi gave Amaterasu a holy necklace which gave her
power over the sky.
In Japanese Mythology, Amaterasu is a sun goddess. She sent her grandson Jimmu
to earth to be the very first ruler of Japan 3,000 years ago. He was the
beginning of the divine family of Japanese emperors.
Amaterasu is a sun goddess of the Shinto religion.
It is believed that Amaterasu sent her grandson Jimmu to Earth 3,000 years ago
to be the first ruler of Japan, beginning the divine family of Japanese
emperors.
Amaterasu and her brother Susano were having a
competition (the kind of competition is not explained) and Amaterasu refused to
admit that she had lost. Susano was very upset with her pride and he wreaked
havoc throughout the heavens and earth. Amaterasu was either afraid of his
destruction or had her reasons she fled. She found a cave and went deep inside
and refused to leave.
This brought darkness upon all of Japan. The earth
became a dark place, crops would not grow, and the land was becoming barren. The
people of Japan were suffering with the sun goddess in the sky to give them
light.
The gods joined together to find a way to get
Amaterasu to leave the dark cave. Outside the cave they set up a mirror outside
the cave by hanging it from a tree and performed sacrifices and rituals.
Amaterasu peeked outside her cave and asked what
was happening. The gods informed her they had found a new mistress to be her
replacement as the sun goddess. She was very curious over who would take her
place and walked from the cave. Then she was the mirror, she had never seen her
own reflection, and thought maybe this was her majestic replacement. As she
walked up to the mirror, one of the gods grabbed her while the others blocked
the cave.
Amaterasu took her rightful place in heaven and once again life returned to
Japan.
