Who was Long John Silver?
Long John Silver, arguably fiction's most famous pirate
before Captain James Hook and subsequently Captain Jack Sparrow, was one of the
main characters in 'Treasure Island" a classic novel by Robert Louis Stevenson.
Many of the accepted clichés regarding pirates and
their image originated with Stevenson's characterization of Silver.
Said to be partly inspired by Stevenson's dear
writer/editor friend William Henley, Silver had only one good leg and used
crutches to get around.
With a parrot on
his shoulder, named Captain Flint, after the captain he had served under,
completes the generic pirate look.
A strong and fiery fighter in spite of his
disability, the truth about his true nature comes as a shock to the novel's
protagonist, Jim, who truly thought he was a good natured and trustworthy man.
Silver led the mutiny that formed a significant part
of the plot of "Treasure Island". Greedy, he was, it being in his nature as a
pirate but Silver showed a un-pirate-like caution when it came to money and
funds and even arranged for his wife to take care of his money for him while he
was away.
A memorable figure in literary culture, Silver's
impact on popular culture is now evident as well.
