WORLD'S SECOND
HIGHEST GROSSING MOVIE
THE LONGEST LIST OF THE LONGEST
STUFF AT THE LONGEST DOMAIN NAME AT LONG LAST
What was the world's second highest grossing movie?
After Titanic, people throughout
the movie industry and all over the world were sure that no other movie would
ever come close to the box office blowout that that movie made. And they were
right but there was one movie that came close. The Lord of the Rings: Return of
the King made only $700,000 less than Titanic and so, is the second
highest-grossing movie of all time.
The Return of the King is the third installment of
the Lord of the Rings trilogy and it tells the story of how Gandalf the Wizard
and Theoden King of Rohan gather their allies to fight for the protection of
Minas Tirith, the capital of Gondor from Sauron. Being overpowered, it is
ultimately the Hobbits, Frodo, and Sam who are left with the ring and need to
travel to Mount Doom in order to destroy the One Ring.
The movie grossed $1.2 billion and being the second
highest-gross movie of all time is not the only record this movie is known for.
Not only did it score big with fans, it also made quite an impression on
critics, including the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, which
honored it with 11 nominations, of which it won all 11. One of the eleven
categories was Best Picture and when it took home the golden statue for this
particular category, it made history as being the first fantasy film to ever do
so.
Return of the King was released on December 17,
2003 and after inflation adjustments, is the 49th most successful film ever in
North America. The movie was released on DVD almost exactly one year later on
December 14, 2004.
