What was the the second Reich?

The Second Reich was also known as the German Empire, rather than the Holy Roman Empire that the First Reich was known as, and it was also not in power nearly as long as the First Reich. Instead of reigning for 10 centuries as the First Reich did, the Second Reich came into power after the First Reich fell and was present in the areas known as Prussia and Bradenburg and was in power from 1871 – 1919. It was during this time that Otto von Bismark brought Germany together and had a very high prevalence in World War I.

Although it may seem as though the Second Reich was naturally followed by the Third Reich, which was ruled by Hitler, it was actually followed by a time known as the Weimar Republic, which is also sometimes called the pre-Third Reich.
