Who was the second Queen of England?
Many people think of the current
Queen of England as the second Queen of England and this may be in part due to
the fact that she is actually titled Queen Elizabeth II. However, going in
chronological order, the current Queen may be the second Elizabeth, but she is
not the second Queen that England has ever seen. That title belongs to Mary II,
who was the official second Queen of England and coincidentally, during her
reign she was considered to be second in power.
Mary II reigned with William II and III, who was
her husband and first cousin. Although Mary was the blood heir to the throne, it
was William that was considered to be mostly in power. But even that wasn’t
because he was so much smarter than Mary or knew so much more about the people
than Mary did. In fact, while they were both in reign, William was quite
dependent on Mary for royalty duties and running the country. Mary also took
over full duties of the throne when William would be off at war. Even still, it
was William that was considered to be the true ruler and history books today
even refer to “William and Mary,” with more emphasis being placed on William as
ruler. It was also William that took over the throne fully after Mary II died in
1694.
Mary II was born in 1662 and she started her reign
in 1689. She continued her reign until 1694 and during that time she was very
active in the Church of England and was even its Supreme Governor.
